Asanoya Boulangerie (Singapore) and Suzie Q Cafe (Sydney)

This week Carmen enjoyed the fresh produce of Sydney's ever-changing food scene, and Amanda sampled a new Japanese bakery which recently opened its first international outlet in Singapore.

I'm usually not a fan of Asian-style bakeries, but curiosity got the better of me when I noticed a new Japanese bakery open a few blocks from my apartment. Asanoya Bakery originated from Japan in the 1930s and is known for its stone-oven baked breads and pastries with a fusion of Japanese and European flavours and techniques.

The bakery's signature is their Fruit Rye bread. Unfortunately by the time I had arrived (mid-afternoon) they had sold out, so make sure you get there early if you want a loaf!

I opted for something savoury: the mushroom quiche and the bacon and spinach open sandwich. The quiche was surprisingly creamy and extremely filling despite its small serving size. The open sandwich, in contrast, was delightfully light and had a good balance of melted cheese, tomato, bacon, spinach and fluffy white bread.

For good measure, I opted to buy the chocolate lava cube to take home with me for a late afternoon snack. I was instructed by the staff to heat this up in the oven for 1 minute or microwave for 20 seconds. It was certainly molten; the chocolate lava spilled out during the re-heating process, which I mopped up with the chocolate bread. While I liked that the chocolate was not too sweet, it was not intense enough for me in flavour, and the bread was slightly rubbery.

Overall, while this cafe may not be great for people watching (you overlook the carpark), it offers a huge variety of breads and pastries, along with soups, salads and sandwiches. Interesting options to come back for included the maple walnut pretzel, Hokkaido red bean paste bun, and green tea bread. A welcome addition to the Singapore bread scene!

I've spent the weekend in Sydney, Australia - our home town - and every time I come back, I realise how much I miss it. There's almost nothing better than wandering around the streets of Surry Hills and discovering a new, hip cafe that serves delicious and wholesome food, and people watching the interesting hipster crowds that go by. 

Follow that up with a trip to Bondi or Manly beach, and a drink with friends at a funky cocktail bar, and your day goes by in a blur (particularly if the cocktail bar is really good!).

Oh, and did I mention the fresh produce? Australia produces (in my biased opinion) some of the best seafood and meat in the world - something we need more of in Hong Kong!
