Australian Art & Wine with Jasper Knight

This week I was invited to attend an exclusive wine and art event run by NAB (the National Australia Bank), which was held in The Space in Hong Kong.

Dubbed "Australia: From Palette to Palate", the exclusive showcase began with canapes consisting of garden cups with spinach, onion confit, horseradish cream and edible petals, as well as kangaroo meatballs with yoghurt and sumac. Gin and tonics made with Australian Four Pillars Gin were served as we wandered around the space which had been set up like an art gallery, admiring work from Australian artist Jasper Knight provided by the Cat Street Gallery.

Jasper Knight is probably best known for his work as a finalist in the highly competitive Australian Archibald Prize Competition for a number of years. The work that was on display in the first room consisted largely of Australian themed pieces, including an image of Australian cockatoos. However, in the second room where the dining table was placed, we were surrounded by work that reflected aspects of Hong Kong, including a sampan, junk boat, and even the red bars from a rollercoaster at Ocean Park.

Dinner was nothing short of superb, and each meal was accompanied by Australian Penfolds wine. The amuse bouche consisted of spanner crab with cucumber and lime jelly (paired with a Penfolds riesling), and the starter was pearl meat with pickled melon, squid ink rocks, sea pearls and shitaki broth (paired with a chardonnay).

It was the main and dessert that blew me away though: the slow cooked Australian lamb with parsnip puree and Aboriginal spice foam was tender, meaty and full of flavour; and the deconstructed pavlova with minted berries, fig and burnt cream was absolutely divine.

Amanda is still in China without access to Blogger, but she should be back on the blog next week. We're heading to the Formula 1 in Singapore, so we'll be sure to have lots of reviews (and hopefully pictures of Maroon 5) for you guys!

xx Carmen
